Goats are a great way to clear brush on slopes and in hard-to-reach spots, but grazing is a live-animal job, not a mowing job. A good operator plans fencing, water, supervision, and timing around your property and your fire-safety goals. Here is what to look for.

Start with your goal: defensible space

In fire-prone areas, California law (Public Resources Code §4291) calls for up to 100 feet of defensible space around homes, with the first 5 feet (“Zone 0”) kept clear of anything that burns. Goats are good at brush and grass farther out and on slopes; they don’t replace hand work right around the house. Tell operators which areas you need cleared, and by when. Some fire agencies and cities set weed abatement deadlines each year.

Licensing: what applies and what doesn’t

Grazing itself is not construction work, so there’s generally no CSLB contractor license class for it. But if the same company also offers hand crews, tree work, or machine clearing on a job of $1,000 or more, ask for its CSLB license and check it free at cslb.ca.gov. Tree work is the C-49 class.

Ask for insurance in writing

Ask for a certificate of liability insurance that covers livestock on a client’s property: goats can get out, damage a neighbor’s plants, or wander onto a road. If they bring workers, ask about workers’ comp too.

Get a written, itemized quote

A useful quote lists the area (acres or sq ft), the number of animals, expected days on site, setup and travel fees, water, and what the property should look like when they leave. Many operators have a minimum job size or fee. Published ranges from Southern California operators run roughly $850–$1,800 per acre (ScapeGoats, Ventura Brush Goats), with small jobs costing more per acre. How to read reviews

Questions to ask before you book

  1. What’s your minimum job size and fee?
  2. How many goats, for how many days, for my area?
  3. Who is on site, and how often?
  4. What fencing do you use, and what happens if goats get out?
  5. Do you bring water?
  6. What will be left (stems, woody brush), and do you offer hand cleanup afterward?
  7. Can you finish before my fire agency’s deadline?

Does a goat grazing company need a contractor license?

Grazing itself generally isn’t construction work. If the same company does hand clearing, tree work, or machine work on a job of $1,000 or more, ask for its CSLB license and check it at cslb.ca.gov.

Can goats clear my defensible space?

They’re good for grass and brush farther from the house and on slopes. The first 5 feet around a home (Zone 0) still needs hand work and non-burnable materials.

What should I ask a goat grazing service?

Ask about insurance, fencing, supervision, water, predators, toxic plants, minimums, days on site, and whether they can finish before your fire agency’s deadline.
